Why you would want to download reels
Instagram Reels disappear from the feed quickly. Favourites from creators you follow can be hard to find again later, and not every reel has the "Save" option enabled by the creator. Downloading the file gives you a permanent, offline copy at the original quality.
Method 1: InstaDownloader in Safari (recommended)
Step 1 - Copy the reel link
Open Instagram on your iPhone and find the reel you want. Tap the share arrow at the bottom right, then tap Copy link. The URL is now in your clipboard.
Step 2 - Open InstaDownloader in Safari
Open Safari and go to the InstaDownloader homepage. Safari is the recommended browser on iPhone because only Safari can trigger the native iOS "Save to Photos" sheet.
Step 3 - Paste the link and tap Download
Tap inside the input box and paste your link. The reel preview loads in a few seconds. Tap Download MP4 and iOS will present a sheet asking whether to save the video to your Files app or directly to Photos.
Step 4 - Confirm in Photos
Open the Photos app and check your Recents album. The reel saves as a standard .mp4 clip with full resolution and audio intact.
Method 2: Share sheet shortcut
If you prefer a faster workflow, add the InstaDownloader website to your iOS Home Screen as a web app. Then, from any reel, tap the share arrow and choose InstaDownloader from the shortcuts row. The link pastes automatically.
Why not the Instagram built-in save feature?
Instagram's built-in save feature bookmarks a reel inside the app but does not download the file to your device. If the creator deletes the reel or makes their account private, your saved bookmark disappears. Downloading produces a permanent local copy that survives any action the creator takes.
Does it work for all reels?
Yes - for public reels only. Private accounts require the owner's permission and are not accessible through any public media endpoint.
Video quality
InstaDownloader fetches the original CDN file that Instagram hosts. If the creator uploaded a 1080p clip, you receive exactly that. There is no re-encoding or quality loss.
Troubleshooting common issues
The download button shows an error - The reel link may have expired or the account may have been set to private since you copied the link. Re-copy the link and try again.
The file saves to Files instead of Photos - Tap the downloaded .mp4 in the Files app, then tap the Share icon and choose Save video to move it to your Photos library.
Safari blocks the download - Go to Settings → Safari → Downloads and make sure the destination is set to either iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
