How to use Instagram reels to grow a business

Short videos pull organic reach that static posts stopped getting years ago.

Why organic reach shifted to Reels

Static feed photos and carousels saw their organic reach halved between 2018 and 2023 as Instagram moved to an interest-based algorithm. Static posts now reach an estimated 3-5% of followers, down from 25-30% when Instagram was chronological. Reels, by contrast, consistently reach 2-3× a creator's existing follower count through the Reels discovery feed because Instagram is aggressively competing with TikTok and YouTube Shorts for short-form video audience.

For businesses, this means Reels are currently the highest-leverage, zero-cost way to increase brand visibility on the platform.

Types of business reels that perform

Product demonstration reels

Show the product in actual use. Close-up hands-on footage of a product being used outperforms lifestyle photography almost universally. Keep demos under 45 seconds and lead with the result (the finished dish, the assembled product, the before/after).

Behind-the-scenes reels

Audiences respond strongly to process content. A bakery showing bread being made at 4 AM, a clothing brand showing the fabric sourcing trip, a software company showing a whiteboard planning session - these build trust by demonstrating there are real humans behind the brand.

Tutorial reels

Teach something directly related to your category. A skincare brand teaching the correct order to apply serums gets saved by viewers who plan to implement the routine. Saves are the strongest algorithmic signal and are more likely to come from tutorial content than from brand content.

Customer transformation reels

Before and after results - with the customer's explicit permission - drive high engagement. The contrast format works on every platform. Pair with a caption that asks viewers to share their own result.

Trending sound remixes

Overlay your product on a sound that is trending in your region. The algorithm rewards content that uses trending sounds. Keep the connection to the sound natural; forced or irrelevant remixes tend to underperform because they feel like ads.

Posting cadence

Three to five reels per week with a consistent visual style - colour palette, font, footage quality - builds a recognisable brand aesthetic over time. Posting twenty reels in one week and then going quiet for two weeks confuses the algorithm and your audience. Consistency matters more than volume.

Converting viewers into customers

Your profile is the bridge between organic reach and revenue. Every reel that reaches a non-follower gives them a reason to visit your profile. Optimise your bio link (use a Linktree or direct product page link), your profile picture, and your pinned posts to convert first-time visitors.

Measuring what works

Track these three metrics per reel at the 7-day mark:

  • Reach: non-follower impressions as a percentage of total reach
  • Save rate: total saves divided by reach (aim for >2%)
  • Profile visits: viewers who clicked through to your profile

Reels with high save rate and high profile visits are your templates. Replicate the format, not necessarily the content.
